How Plan Management Works

May 16, 2023

One of the most common questions we are asked is “how do plan managers get paid?” And we get it – how is it possible to outsource the administrative side of managing your NDIS plan, to expert plan managers, and pay nothing out of pocket for the service? It’s simpler than you think!

How does plan management work? How does a plan manager get paid?

At your initial planning meeting, or plan review, you are asked how you would like to manage your NDIS plan. There are three options: self-managed, NDIA-managed, or plan managed (read more about the options here).

When you choose plan management, you are simply allocated the extra NDIS funding needed to pay for plan management services.

  • It doesn’t draw from your existing funding.
  • It doesn’t cost you anything.
  • Every NDIS participant is entitled to it.

Once you’ve chosen your plan manager and have a Service Agreement in place, you simply send them your invoices for payment/reimbursement. They’ll take care of the rest, including all the record-keeping and budget tracking.  They’ll also claim directly from the NDIS to cover the cost of their services.

Looking after the administrative side of your NDIS plan can be time-consuming and confusing.  It’s a great comfort to know that help is available, at no cost to you, from experienced plan managers who understand how the NDIS works, and how to help you use every dollar wisely.

How will I know how much of my NDIS funding I have spent?

Using plan management shouldn’t feel like you’re handing over all control of your funding. Disability Plan Services is committed to being completely transparent with you about how your budget is tracking.

  • Disability Plan Services clients have personal access to their own 24/7 online dashboard. It means you can log in at any time of the day or night to see the status of your budget and payments.
  • We will also send you a Client Budget Report every month, so you can keep track of your plan spending and balance.
  • If there is ever an over-spend or under-spend, we will be in touch with you as soon as possible to discuss the situation. Occasional over-spends can happen if you incur unexpected expenses, but we’ll help you to make sure it’s not a regular issue. We’re here to support you to understand the most efficient ways to use your funding.

You are also most welcome to contact your plan manager at any time if you have questions. Our offices are open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. We are happy to communicate using your preferred method – whether phone, email or in-person.

Can I switch to Plan Management?

Yes! You can switch to plan management at your next plan review. If you don’t have one coming up soon, you can contact the NDIS to request a plan variation, and explain that you want to switch to plan management.  Our team can also assist you with this – contact us to find out how.
