What you need to know about NDIS planning meetings

Your planning meeting is the first step on your NDIS journey. It is an important part of creating a plan that is going to support you and help you to achieve your goals. Your NDIS planning meeting can be conducted either in person or over the phone – whichever options suits you best. Depending on whether you want to self-manage your plan, have the NDIA manage your plan or work with an approved NDIS Plan Management provider, such as Disability Plan Services, who conducts your planning meeting will vary.

It’s important to be prepared for your planning meeting regardless of how you want your planning process to be managed going forward. You can do this by gathering the information the NDIS requires about you to create a plan that is best suited to your needs. More information about what you should prepare is in the table below.

You should focus on discussing your long-term and short-term goals at your meeting. This will help to ensure you receive the funding you need for capacity building supports. These supports are important to improving your independence, skills and community participation.

Preparing for the NDIS

Your planning meeting is designed to help prepare you for a successful NDIS plan which includes enough funding to help you reach your goals and live a fulfilling life.

We’ve supported many people with disability, just like you, to be prepared for their NDIS planning meeting. If you choose to conduct your NDIS planning meeting face-to-face, you are welcome to bring a supporter with you. Having someone you trust along is a great way to make sure you haven’t forgotten to mention anything. This person can also advocate on your behalf and make sure you’re feeling safe and secure. If you’d like Disability Plan Services to join you at your planning meeting, contact us on 1800 312 870.

Here is a breakdown of what you should have ready before your NDIS Planning Meeting.

What to prepareWhy
Your personal details about yourself and your disability.

It’s important for the NDIA Planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to get to know you and your disability in order to understand what makes you unique and how the NDIS can help you.

Assessments or reports from health professionals relating to your disability.

Documentation from health professionals who know you will make it much easier for the NDIA Planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to successfully request the funding you require.

What disability support services you are currently receiving, including from family members and the wider community.

This helps show what supports you are currently receiving, if it is adequate and whether or not you require additional supports. This is a good opportunity to highlight how much assistance you receive from your loved ones and request supports that help improve your independence.

How you manage your day-to-day activities.

Your capacity building budget will include funding for assistance with day-to-day activities which play a key role in your independence and ultimately, reaching your long-term goals

What you enjoy doing and what you are good at.

Identifying what recreational activities you enjoy most is important for your happiness and independence. Focus on what you like spending your time doing and what supports you require to continue doing them.

Your goals for the next year and beyond.

Having both short-term and long-term goals to work towards will help the NDIA Planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to identify the best supports possible for you.

How you want your plan to be managed.

If you request that a registered Plan Manager assist with your plan, your funds and your budget, additional funds will be provided to cover NDIS plan management.

Why ask Disability Plan Services to manage your NDIS plan?

Your planning meeting will include a discussion about how you would like your NDIS plan and funding to be managed in the future. As we outline here, there are ultimately three options for managing your plan.

Selecting Disability Plan Services to provide your NDIS Plan Management comes at no additional cost to you and does not affect your NDIS budget. If you ask for the Plan Management option at your planning meeting, the extra money will be provided to cover the work done by Disability Plan Services.

The advantages of having the team at Disability Plan Services manage your plan are many. We pride ourselves on always focusing on you and what is best for your needs. As real people with plenty of real-world experience, we know how important it is to get to know you, understand your individual circumstances and needs, and help you achieve the life goals you want from your plan.

We have been on this journey many times with people just like you.
