NDIS support coordination

Is your goal to be more socially active? Perhaps you would like to live independently? Or maybe you want to learn a new skill?

The reality is, all of our goals are different, and that’s okay! No matter what your goals are, the NDIS can provide you with the necessary funding and access to support services that help you achieve your goals and live a fulfilling life.

One of the services the NDIS offers funding for is Support Coordination. This type of support is managed by a Support Coordinator whose role is to help you navigate your NDIS plan, connect you with local providers that align to your needs, and provide you with ongoing advice and guidance.

Whether you are hoping to secure funding for Support Coordination, or you have already received funding and are trying to find NDIS Support Coordination in Brisbane, this blog is for you!

What is Support Coordination?

Support Coordination is defined by the NDIS as, “a capacity building support to implement all supports in a participant’s plan, including informal, mainstream, community and funded supports.” Capacity building supports are designed to help you develop your independence and confidence so that you can achieve your short and long-term goals.

There are three levels of Support Coordination, including:

  • Support connection: A short-term type of support coordination that is designed to help connect you with service providers, ensuring you get the most out of your plan to pursue your goals.
  • Coordination of supports: Also referred to as coordination of supports, this support helps you to build the skills you need to understand, implement and use your plan. A support coordinator will work closely with you to ensure you have a range of supports to increase your capacity to manage service delivery tasks and maintain relationships.
  • Specialist Support Coordination: Designed for people with complex needs or difficult circumstances, this specialist type of support coordination assists participants that have barriers to accessing supports.

Support Coordination is managed by a Support Coordinator, who will help you make the most of your NDIS plan so that you can achieve your goals. Support Coordinators wear many hats and are responsible for:

  • Helping you understand and navigate your plan
  • Finding and connecting you with local providers
  • Providing ongoing advice and guidance

Am I eligible for Support Coordination?

Support Coordination is not available to every NDIS participant. The NDIS will only allocate funding based on what is reasonable and necessary to pursue your goals.

Whether you are eligible for Support Coordination will depend on your individual circumstances.

To gauge whether you may be eligible for Support Coordination, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Are you likely to develop the skills and confidence needed to be able to navigate the NDIS independently?
  2. Are you missing an informal support network of friends and family that could otherwise provide a similar type of support?
  3. Are likely to gain a substantial benefit from having the assistance of a Support Coordinator?
  4. Are you new to the NDIS and are receiving your first plan or going through a significant life change?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, then you may be eligible for NDIS Support Coordination!

The next step is to apply for it through the NDIS. The best way to do this is to discuss it in your planning meeting with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC). As a registered NDIS provider, the team at Disability Plan Services can help you prepare for your planning meeting.
